Holy Week and Easter 5th-12th April

In the Christian church, Holy Week is a time when we remember the journey of Jesus towards his crucifixion and then on to his resurrection. As we travel through it, we encounter emotions of confusion, anxiety, fear, pain, guilt, anger, uncertainty, death, helplessness, hope and joy. At this particular time people are feeling many of these emotions.

This year we are having to keep Holy Week and Easter in a very different way as it is not possible to gather together and we have not been able to have the traditional procession of palm crosses that usually starts Holy Week. However, at St. Mary's Church a bare wooden will stand by the gates of the church which reminds us of the depth of God's love for us.

If you are passing the church as part of your daily walk you may care to pause for a moment by the cross, but please do not touch it and please observe the required social distancing at all times.

If you are passing the cross on Easter Day as part of your daily walk, you may like to place a flower in the wire on the cross so that the bare cross is transformed into a visible symbol of hope. Please observe the required social distancing at all times.

John 1 verse 5: The light shines in the darkness and the darkness did not overcome it.

As well as our regular services and special events, there is a lot going on in our churches, from music to bellringing, from youth groups to craft groups, and regular involvement in the wider village communities.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved, but if you would rather just come and worship or join in any of our events, you are equally most welcome.

A Message from Revd Tim Scott

Lent, Holy Week and Easter.

Dear Friends,

This will be a very different Holy Week and Easter for all of us, but we can still journey through it in our own homes. There are many online resources but if you want to start somewhere I suggest:

Church of England
Join Us Service Daily Prayer

It has been really heartening to see the way in which people in the church and community are pulling together at such anxious, uncertain and unknown times. We are having to dig deep into the resources of our faith which can encourage and resource us at a time such as this. Whilst we are not able to attend public worship together we can continue to pray for each other, the communities we seek to serve and those working on our behalf.

We have some downloadable files on this website:

Specifically for Holy week and Easter there is a resource A Lockdown Easter according to the Gospel of Matthew. It gives a passage of scripture, something to think about, something to do and a prayer for each day of Holy Week and up to Easter Day.

You will also find there a resource for Spiritual Communion that some may find helpful.

and finally Worship at Home giving two simple acts of daily worship for those who are isolated, housebound or unable to attend church.

For those who want audio and visual input but may be feeling overloaded with all the on-line links (or not able to easily access them):

BBC 1 and BBC 2 have a range of religious programmes.
On Radio:4: Good Friday 3-3.30p.m. Meditation.
On Radio:4: Easter Day 8.10-9.00a.m. Easter Day Worship.
On Radio 3: Easter Day Choral Evensong 3-4.00p.m.

We journey together as a community of faith... pray for one another. And I pray that in your own way you will each know the presence and peace of the crucified and risen Christ in your hearts. The presence of the risen Christ may be hard to recognise this year but Christ is Risen. He is Risen indeed. Alleluia!

With prayers and best wishes to you all,
